GUIZO LANUIT
Guizo LaNuit came to light as a commission by artists Joe Hiscott and Antonija Livingstone (tho their name suggestion was slightly different) for a one-off cabaret performance at the late, great Meow Mix, a performance series/party for “bent girls and their buddies”. But Guizo would not die.
Blending drooping drag, electro-pop and dark, poetic comedy the spectacle of Guizo casts an ironic glance at the contemporary obsesssion with sharing one’s feelings on a public stage.
Guizo presents multi-lingual musical medleys, schizophrenic rants, gender confusion and live pop-culture mashups. The show takes the form of a melancholic retrospective where Guizo tells us his confusing life story, each episode punctuated by an interpretation of a song he ‘wrote’ (in reality, a panorama of euro-trash, disco, rock & folk hits).
A cult favorite and object of girl-fetish in Montreal, Guizo has angered in Quebec City, mystified in Paris and Maubeuge and delighted in Ljubljana. With Gigi L’amour, he forms Guigi.
“On plonge dans une autre étrange déprime avec Alexis O’Hara, lui aussi de Montréal, qui brouille le show et le genre. La nuit chavire, douteuse et délavée. Ce personnage désabusé, Guizo La Nuit, supposé masculin, bricole au micro et à la console des romances lancinantes. Le chanteur au charme usé, semble atteint d’un spleen incurable, flotte entre deux airs et deux eaux, livre un concert déconcertant à force de boucles et d’échos surdosés et de monologues, cet assemblage toujours au bord d’imploser. Le principal intérêt du show est de placer sans repos et avec un humour plus que décalé le spectateur à contre pied, à ne jamais savoir qui parle et vers où, sil le show commence ou est terminé. Après recherche, il apparaît qu’Alexis O’Hara serait généralement une femme. ”
